 Analysis of the title Untouchable

Mulk Raj Anand's popular novel 'Untouchable' was published in 1935. In the novel, Anand deals with the real life of the all poor. He is a great lover of equality, freedom and social justice. Bakha is the central character and most important Character of the novel. Bakha and his family members suffered from hunger, abuses and dishonour from the upper class people. Bakha is a victim of the Indian casts-system.

 Analysis of the title Untouchable by Mulk Raj Anand

Mulk Raj Anand has given "Untouchable" as the most appropriate, realistic and suitable title to the novel. Anand is a great suppoter of humanism.

An Appropriate Title

Untouchable is the most appropriate title because is it convey to the readers the pitiable condition different types untouchables living in Indian society. They did not enjoy any equal and respectable social position in comparison to the people of upper class. Mulk Raj Anand describe the total routine, mental torture and deep suffering of Bakha, the Untouchable, sweeper and the latrine cleaner. In this way, it can be said rightly that Untouchable is the most an appropriate title of the novel .

Theme

It is a social novel based on the theme of the evil of untouchability India. The theme is regarding poor, dirty and backward condition of the all those men, women, and children who belong to untouchable in India. Mulk Raj Anand describes one day a life of Bakha. The sweeper boy, Bakha has work of keeping the public latrine of the town clean. Anand describes the sorrow, suffering, and social inequality of Bakha in particular and all untouchables. In their daily life, they did the work of sweeping and cleaning latrine and other hard work. Even they were treated with  inequality because they were belongs to lower caste in Indian society. This novel shows Anand's sympathies with the underdog or the weaker section of the society in India.
 

The evil of Untouchability

Bakha is a victim of social injustice. Bakha's duty is very hard. He gets up early in the morning and to do his work cleaning the public latrines. Even doing work hard, he bagged for 'chapatis' door do door. Once when Bakha touched Lalaji at the road unknowingly he reproached and slapped him before the huge crowd of people. Gulabo heated Sohini because of her wonderful beauty. She could not tolerate as her competiter. At the well, Gulabo asked Sohini to return to her house without taking water in her picture because she belongs to lower caste.

The Treatment of Under-dog

Mulk Raj Anand has successfully dealt with the treatment of Under-dog. Anand showed economic Inequality and social injustice of large the number of men, women and children belonging to the lowest caste of Untouchables. They could not enter public temples, could not draw water at the well and could not touch upper class people. They were treated with social distinction.
