It was the day before Christmas. Della had been able to lay one dollar and eight cents:
it was the day for Christmas della counted again and again the money she had saved from the year. But the amount was only one dollar and eight cent and no more. She had saved the money by haggling with the grocer, the vegetable seller and the bucher. The amount was far too small for her purpose. She sank on the shabby couch and cried bitterly.
Della and her husband lived in a small poorly furnished flat.They had to lived on a small income. Della loved her husband dearly:
Della and her husband James Dillingham young, lived a poorly furnished flat at eight dollar per week. The flat looked likes the home of a beggar. The letter-box was unusable and the calling bell did not work. A fall in Mr. Dillingham's weekly income has caused great hardship to the family. But Della loved her husband very dearly.

Della stopped crying, tidied herself and stood musing by the window. She had been saving what we could thought the year to buy Jim of fine Christmas present. She had spent hours planning something nice for him. But she could save only one dollar and eighty seven cents. The amount was all too small for her purpose.
Della hit upon a plan:
There was a pier-glass between the windows of the room. She stood before it and let her hair fall to its full length she hit upon a plan.

The Young had two most valued possession. They were very proud of them. One was Jim's gold watch. It had belong to his grandfather and then two his father. It was a thing that could have made even King Solomon jealous. The other precious thing was Della's long wavy hair. It could have filled queen of Sheba heart with envy.
Della decided to sail her hair
Della's hair fell below her knee. It almost covered her body like a garment. She made up for mind to sell the hair. She would buy a present for Jim with the money. The thought was painful. But she dressed quickly and went out.
Della sold her hair for twenty dollars. She bought platinum fob chain for Jim's watch:
Dela went to a dealer in hair good. She offered to sell her hair. That dealer offered her twenty dollars for her hair. Della sold her hair, and come out of the shop with the money. For two hours she ransacked the stores for a nice present for Jim. At last she found a thing to her liking. It was a platinum fob chain. It was simple but elegant in design. It was a thing worthy of Jim's watch. She bought it for twenty-one dollars and went home. She was happy to think that Jim's grand watch would now have a chain worthy the for it.
Back home she called her remaining hair and weighted for Jim's return:
Back home, she heated her curling irons. With them she curled her remaining hair into tiny close-lying curls. Then she looked at her reflection in the mirror. She was afraid that Jim would be shocked to find her hair gone. At 7 o'clock she made the coffee and got ready to fry and chops. She heard Jim's footsteps on the stairs. She prayed to God that he might still think her pretty.
Jim returned it took him a long time to realise that Della's here was gone
Jim entered. He stopped dead at the door-way. There was a stupefied expression on his face. With that peculiar expression on his face he simply looked at her fixedly. She could not understand what was going on in his mind. She explained to him that she had cut off her hair and sold it to buy him a Christmas present. She tried to console him with the assurance that her hair grow very fast. But still Jim seemed unable to realise that her hair was gone. The blank, almost idiotic look was still there on his face. She pleaded that even with her hair gone she was still herself. She declared that her love for him new no bounds.
Jim awoke out of his trance. He took out of his pocket the present he had brought for her-a set of combs:
Jim awoke out of his trance. He embraced her. He took out a package from his pocket. He assured her that no change in her appearance could make him love her any the less. He told her that if she unwrapped the package she would understand why he had been so extremely shocked. She opened the package and found the set of combs she had long yearned to possess. She cried out in an ecstasy of joy. Then she brust into hysterical tears and Wails. She hugged the combs, smiled through her tears, and said that her hair grow very fast.
Della then showed Jim the present she had brought for him:
Della then remembered that she had not yet shown Jim the present she had bought for him. She eagerly held out to him a platinum chain. She asked Jim if it was not really a beautiful thing.
Jim told Della that the watch had been sold to buy the combs:
Jim set on the couch and smile. He said that their Christmas presents were too nice to be used at the moment. Then he told her that he had sold the watch to buy the combs for her.
These found lovers were to wisest of all who give and receive gifts:
Each sold his or her dearest possession to buy the other present. But the other had no use for it. Their action was prompted by love. They were the wisest giver and receiver of gifts. They were as wish as the Magi who had brought present for the infant Christ.
