In this story there is a girl named Harriet. She often asks everyone what will she do or become when she grows up? She also asks others what you will be when you grow up. Harriet asks her sister Victoria what she will be like when she grows up, Victoria says that she would like to be a Red Cross nun when she grows up. She things about various things but fails to conclude what would she be in her latter life.This is mainly because there is nobody to guide her properly and even in her home she feels lonely and neglected and therefore cannot make adjustment even in her own family. In her family, there are many children. Bea is elder sister but is a bit older to play with her while Victoria is much younger. The elder has developed friendship with valerie. Who often comes to their home. But Harriet does not like him. Har nurse now is also always busy and her brother Bogey does not take interest in anything but his own games. So Harriet has developed habit of loneliness, sits in secluded corners of her home and enjoys the sound of flowing water of the river. She aks others what they would like to be in future and thinks about various options like a doctor, a politician, an actor or a dancer. She does not like the choice of other so we find her anxious about herself. Captain John and valerie often visit them and Harriet does not like it. She wonderes why they come there. Nan tells her that the captain needs something but Harriet does not like. There is love between Nan and John. He participat in the game with the children and plays with them the game of the lead. He prepares a piece of lead into a ball and tells that this is a globe. In her imagination Harriet sees the land and sea on the surface of that ball and for sometime, it becomes a significant thing for her.
